Peatland is located in the southern part of Hiiu county, 15 km south of the city  Kärdla, south of the Hüti-Käina road. The peatland formed by paludification. Feeds on groundwater. The water recipient is River Lugus.  The area of the peatland is 340 ha, of which 84 ha is a peat deposit; 0.16 million tons are all well decomposed economic probable peat reserves  (Orru, 1995). Kaupsi  has 299 ha of  eutrophic and 41 ha of oligtrophic peat layers.  Eutrophic peat  layers are well-decomposed (39%) wood-reed, wood-grass or reed-grass peat with thickness of 1.10 ... 1.40 m, ash content  is 10.9%, moisture content is 86%. The oligotrophic peat consists of slightly decomposed (16%) S.fuscum, wood-Sphagnum and wood-reed peat, thickness of 1.20 ... 1.70 m  , ash content is 2.8% and moisture content is 90% . The one part of the bog is afforested (Allikvee et al., 1972). The Ministry of the Environment has included 30 ha of the peat areas in the usable peat reserve (Regulation no. 87; 27.12.2016).
