Description

Peatland is located in the central part of Hiiu county, 1.0 km east of the Kõrgessaare-Hüti road. The peat formed by terrestrialisation  (there is a 0.7 m thick layer of lake mud under peat). It feeds on  groundwater, the water recipient is Armioja. A wooded bog  and fen woodland spread in the  peatland. The area of the peatland is 127 ha, of which 116 ha is fen peat  and 11 ha is bog peat layers. The peat deposit covers 52 ha,  peat economic probable reserves are 0.62 million tons of well-decomposed peat. The deposit consists of well-decomposed (46%) reed peat, thickness 1.20 m, ash content is 6.5% and moisture content is 87%. The oligotrophic peat consists of moderately decomposed (18%) peat with thickness of 1.40 m, ash content of 7.7% and moisture content of 92% (Allikvee et al., 1972; Orru et al., 1988). The eutrophic peat area is suitable for cultivating grassland, it is recommended to leave the peatland part in its natural state (Orru et al., 1988). Not included in the list of usable peatlands prepared by the Ministry of Environmental (Regulation no. 78; 27.12.2019).
