Abstrakt

This paper describes a new species of marine euendolithic microorganism, Cyanosaccus atticus Anagnost d is et Pantazidou (Cyanophyceae, Chroococcales, Hydrococcaceae, Podocapsoideae). It differs from the recently established species of Cyanosaccus (C. piriformis Lukas et Golubic , C. aegaeus Anagnotid is et Pantazido  ) by its mode of cell division, cell dimensions and life cycle. This chrooccoid cyanophyte was found boring into marine carbonate substrates in the supralitoral (supratidal) and eulitoral (intertidal) zones on the east coast (Schinias, Petaiion Gulf) and on the west coast (Varkiza, Saronikos Gulf) of Attiki peninsula, Aegaeon Pelagos, Hellas (Aegean Sea, Greece). The euendolithic genus Cyanosaccus Lukas et Golubic exhibits many similarities (cell dimensions, life cycle) with the monotypic, epilithic and debatable genus Podocapsa Ercegovic . However, the ability to bore into carbonate substrate, consists a fundamental criterion for distinguishing euendolithic from epilithic microorganisms, which oblige us to consider them at least from the ecological point of view as separate genera.
